Katsudon (Japanese: カツ丼) is a Japanese dish consisting of a bowl of rice (Japanese: 丼 donburi) topped with a breaded pork cutlet (Japanese: 豚カツ tonkatsu), an egg omelette, vegetables, and other condiments. It is the favourite dish of Yuuri Katsuki. The English dub describes it as a "pork cutlet bowl".

Yuuri Katsuki is usually only allowed to eat the dish when he wins a tournament. However, after returning home after his first Figure Skating Grand Prix Final, he eats the dish often, causing him to gain weight.

Yuri Plisetsky often calls Yuuri Katsuki by the nickname Katsudon/Pork Cutlet Bowl.

Appearances

Victor Nikiforov asks Yuuri for his favourite food in an attempt to get to know the latter better. In response, Yuuri's mother Hiroko serves Victor an extra-large portion of katsudon, saying the dish is their specialty. Victor greatly enjoys the dish, even going so far as to describe it as the "food that God eats". Yuri Plisetsky, who travels to Hasetsu in search of Victor, is also seen enjoying the dish. Yuuri wishes that he would win competitions so that he can eat katsudon together with Victor.[1]

Yuuri defines "Eros" as losing the ability to make rational decisions. After realising that katsudon causes him to act that way, he uses the dish as his inspiration for his short program. Yuri Plisetsky laughs at the decision which causes Yuuri Katsuki to be embarrassed, but later on, Victor Nikiforov assures Yuuri Katsuki of this choice by telling Yuuri that he loves Katsudon a lot.[2]

Yuri's grandfather Nikolai Plisetsky makes Pirozhki stuffed with ingredients of katsudon after Yuri mentions that he enjoys eating it. Yuri eats one, but gives the rest to Yuuri as an early birthday present to cheer Yuuri up.[3]

Quotes

  • "Is this the food that God eats?"[1] - Victor Nikiforov
  • "I'm a pork cutlet bowl fatale that enthralls men."[2] - Yuuri Katsuki

Trivia

  • The word katsudon might be seen as a play on Yuuri's surname, Katsuki (勝生). Katsu (勝つ) means "win", which may be a parallel to why Yuuri only gets to eat katsudon when he wins.
  • The dish appears in the midmark of Episode 2.
